M u s i c - R e v i e w s

Godzik Pink "eSeM, eKeLEM" (?) Wow! Goddamn this was awesome. I've been listening to a lotof Jazz over the past two years and this hit that special part of my heart that is receptive newsounds. I really liked this. Wacked out experimental jazzy stuff. Jump back, Duke. Thisone's meaty. (what did I say-Translation: I liked it). 5RC

Witchypoo "Public Works" Slim Moon's and half of Olympia's side project up front. Every
couple of years Withcypoo would put out a single or a short EP, but now they've thrown them all together for this. Witchypoo's kind of hard to take at times, but at other times they are so
right on. There is a song here called "Fuck The President" that is the catchiest song ever.
Honest to god, I had this stuck in my head for weeks. 5RC

Lee Hazelwood & Ann Margaret "The Cowboy and the Lady" Steve Shelley re-released this 1969 record on his Smell Like Records a little while ago. If you're not familiar with Lee Hazelwood,I think he wrote "Jackson" (done by Johnny Cash and Pansy Division). This sounds western, but not twangy. Leonard Cohen doing the soundtrack for a Clint Eastwood cowboy movie. Half the songs are duets with Ann Margaret. This was a nice surprise. Smells Like Records

Lee Hazelwood "Cowboy in Sweeden" I think this is the soundtrack for a 60's TV show called "Cowboy in Sweeden." An odd premise for TV, a medium that is certainly lacking in weird concepts for television shows. I don't know anything about the show, but the soundtrack is good. Same haunting Leonard Cohen voice. I like this one better than the Ann Margaret album, but they're both good. Nice addition to the SMR roster. Smells Like Records

Hungry Ghosts "Alone, Alone" Like a little symphony. I don't know if I could just sit down
and listen to this instrumental, but it's has a good ambient sound to it.

Dave Dondero "Spider West, and Mishkin and a City Bus" Dave's second release on Ghostmeat. This time he got a little help from some of his friends and put out a great album. Dave writes great lyrics and is by far the passionate folk singer I can think of around today. This CD comes with a booklet, too that must have taken forever to put together. A nice companion to the CD and a true labor of love. This one is limited, so get it while you can. He's constantly on tour, so next time you see his name on some flyer do yourself a favor and see him. Look for a record on Planit-X sometime soon. Ghostmeat Records

This Bike is a Pipe Bomb "Dance Party With …" This is one of my favorite bands. Local or not and is one of those few bands that I get really excited about anything new. I got to hear this CD right after it was cut (even before Ryan I think). I liked it then and I love it now. These
are folk/punk anthems of home for me and hold a special place in my heart. They are awesome
songwriters and are so much fun live. Every time I hear this band I smile. I hope Pipe Bomb
goes on forever. VIVA PIPE BOMB! Plan it-X Records

Mudhoney- "March To Fuzz" I'm so glad this came out. I've been getting a little nostalgic for all that Grunge stuff lately. The LP is on colored vinyl, too. You probably know most of the
songs here (if you're a fan at least). Most greatest hits leave some stuff off, but I think this is pretty thorough. Triple LP. This is just great. Sub Pop

Rymodee "My Acoustic Guitar is on Fire" and it is! Rymo smokes ass on this, his first solo CD release. There are a few Pipe Bomb songs on here (Ryan is their main songwriter), but a lot more of his own stuff. Same folk/punk style as This Bike is a Pipe Bomb, but a little more personal. I had a tape of this that I took with me on a long Greyhound trip a while back.
Every time I got homesick for my friends, I put this tape in the walkman and started dreaming of eating mashed potatoes and vegan biscuits and gravy with all my friends at the dinner table.
Ryan writes the songs that make the whole world sing (my world at least). I love this so much.
Spare Change

Sleater Kinney-"All Hands on the Bad One" Listening to their first record and then listening tothis makes me think they are two different bands. Bands grow and change styles, but I was so in love with the old stuff. It seemed to speak to me more than their newer stuff does. The new stuff is still good. They've become incredible musicians and great songwriters, but I don't fall in love with each album like I used to. I wish I didn't feel this way, but I do. I heard
Kill Rock Stars is releasing a collection of Heavens To Betsy (Corin's first band) singles
soon. I'm looking forward to that. I still like them, but it's not the same now. Kill Rock Stars

Cadillaca-"Introducing…" If this were Sleater-Kinney, I'd be all about them again. I know this is a year or so old, but I love this record and think that everyone should know about it. If
you like Sleater-Kinney, get this. Great hooks, catchy songs, and fun lyrics. "June and July"
is the funnest song to sing ever (Next to 'Fuck The President'). I know I shouldn't compare,
but…I like this one so much.
K Records

Modest Mouse-"Building Nothing out of Something" This is their last indy release before they
sell their soul to Epic for a bigger production budget. I hope the new one is good, but this
one will hold you over until then. This is a singles collection, so it's nothing new but it's a
nice compilation of some of their best stuff. Like any greatest hits record, they leave a lot
out, but it's still a good one to have.
Up Records

Bangs-"Sweet Revenge" This is great! Fast catchy melodic Ramonesey style punk with female
vocals that will get you jumping around for hours. There is even a Rock ballad on this one and
a Cheap Trick cover. Everything I hear from these kids I like. A lot.
Kill Rock Stars

Tight Brothers From Way Back When-"Running Though My Bones" I've wanted to hear these guys for
a while. Members of Mukilteo Fairies and BTPNLSL are in this ( I think singing, but I might be
wrong). Liked it, but it was a little too rock for my personal taste. AC/DC gets brought up a
lot in reviews. I don't know if I'd day that but I can see how people come to that conclusion.
They love Rock and Roll, that's for sure. Yeah oh yeah oh yeah.
Kill Rock Stars

Blank Fight- "House Band Fued" This is so good. I'm not just saying that cuz most of my roommates are on it,
either. This started off as a house band to play in this battle of the house bands with my next
door neighbors. Their band never really took off, but these kids did a few shows, put out a
tape, CD, and 7" and it's really good. Aaron and Cindy from Astrid Oto, Skott from Woodenhorse,
and Rymodee from This Bike are on this. Covers and old IWW song, a Rymodee song, and a few
other originals. Good fast punk. Awesome.
(po box on record is bad. Write to Cometbus for a copy or Subterranean locally)

Get Hustle- "Earth Odyssey" Ex-Members of Antioch Arrow. Sounds like Unwound with a piano and
female vocals. I really liked this. Unpredictable with a slight bluesy vocal slant (maybe).
Similar to Victory at Sea. This one will keep you awake at night.
5RC

Schema- Trance like hypnotic white noise. Similar to that Low sound, but not quite. Like
small waves in the ocean that if you're not watching closely, will drown you. This band has a
few members of Hovercraft in it. I'm really getting into this kind of stuff lately. 5RC is
putting out some great stuff. Maybe not for everyone, but I liked this a lot.
